The Hungarian Address Card

Wherever you settle in Hungary, you are expected to register your address and carry an address card, the lakcímkártya. It is a small but important document: you will need it to open a bank account, deal with the tax office, access healthcare, and sign many contracts. Here is how to get one.

What is the lakcímkártya?

The lakcímkártya (officially the lakcímigazolvány) is a laminated card that certifies your registered Hungarian address. It shows your address and your Hungarian personal identification number, with a barcode officials can scan to confirm where you live. It is separate from your residence permit, though for non-EU residents the two are closely linked.

When you need to register

If you are staying in Hungary for more than three months, you must register your address within 15 days of moving in, and you re-register whenever you change address. Registering late can bring fines and hold up other essentials, such as your tax number or access to healthcare.

Where and how to register

You register at the kormányablak (the government one-stop office) or the district office responsible for your address. Many people can also register online through magyarorszag.hu or the EnterHungary portal using an Ügyfélkapu (Client Gate) account. For EU nationals the card is usually printed on the spot, while non-EU residents receive it together with, or shortly after, their residence permit card.

Documents you will need

  • A valid passport, national ID, or residence permit.
  • Your lease agreement with the landlord’s written consent, or proof that you own the property.
  • The completed registration form (lakcímbejelentő lap), available at the office or online.
  • For family members, marriage and birth certificates, officially translated if they are not in Hungarian.

What you can do with it

The address card unlocks much of everyday administration in Hungary. You will use it to open a bank account, register with the tax authority, access public healthcare, enrol children in school, and sign utility or phone contracts. It is one of the first things to sort out once you arrive.

If you are still arranging your stay, our partner immigration lawyers can guide you through registration alongside your residence permit.
