Hungary Visa Requirements for US Citizens
Americans can visit Hungary visa-free for up to 90 days. If you want to live, work, or run a business from Hungary, you will need a residence permit. Here is everything you need to know.
Quick facts for US citizens
Short stays: up to 90 days
US citizens can enter Hungary and the wider Schengen Area without a visa for short stays of up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. This covers tourism, business meetings, visiting family, and other short-term purposes.
The 90-day limit applies across all 29 Schengen countries combined. Days spent in Germany, France, Italy, or any other Schengen member count toward the same 90-day allowance. Once you have used your 90 days, you must leave the Schengen Area and wait another 90 days before returning.
You cannot take up employment, start a business, or enroll in a long-term study program during a visa-free stay. For any of those purposes, you need a residence permit.
Entry requirements
When arriving in Hungary, US citizens should have the following ready:
- Valid US passport: Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area. Although the US has a bilateral agreement that sometimes exempts Americans from the 10-year passport age rule, it is safest to carry a passport issued within the last 10 years to avoid complications.
- Travel health insurance: Not strictly mandatory for Americans, but strongly recommended. Medical care in Hungary without insurance can be costly, and border officials occasionally ask for proof of coverage.
- Proof of sufficient funds: You may be asked to show that you can support yourself financially during your stay. A credit card, bank statement, or cash equivalent is usually enough.
- Accommodation details: A hotel booking, Airbnb confirmation, or invitation letter from a host can be requested at immigration.
- Return or onward travel: Evidence of plans to leave the Schengen Area before your 90 days expire, such as a return flight booking.
In practice, Americans entering Hungary through Budapest Airport are rarely questioned beyond a passport check. Having these documents available simply ensures a smooth entry if asked.
The 90/180-day Schengen rule explained
This is the rule that catches most Americans off guard. The 90-day visa-free allowance is not per country and it is not a simple calendar calculation.
The Schengen Area uses a rolling 180-day window. On any given day you are present in the Schengen Area, the authorities look back 180 days and count how many of those days you were inside the zone. If the total is 90 or more, you are overstaying.
This means you cannot simply leave Hungary for a weekend, re-enter, and restart your 90 days. Every day inside any Schengen country counts. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, and entry bans affecting all 29 Schengen member states.
If you plan to spend more than 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen Area, you need a residence permit in one of the member states.
ETIAS: coming in 2027
Starting in 2027, US citizens will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorisation before entering the Schengen Area. ETIAS is similar to the Canadian eTA or Australia’s ETA. It is not a visa.
The application is completed online, costs a small fee, and is typically approved within minutes. Once issued, it is valid for three years and covers unlimited entries for short stays.
Staying longer than 90 days
Americans who want to live in Hungary beyond the 90-day visa-free window need a Hungarian residence permit. Because the US is a visa-free country, you have an advantage: you can fly to Hungary on your visa-free allowance and submit your residence permit application from inside the country, either online via Enter Hungary or in person at an NDGAP (National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing) regional office.
This means you do not need to visit a Hungarian embassy before travelling. You can arrive, settle in, and then begin the application process.

How long can Americans stay in Hungary without a visa?
Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. This limit is shared across all 29 Schengen countries, so time spent in other Schengen members (Germany, France, Spain, etc.) counts toward the same 90 days.
Can US citizens work in Hungary?
Not on a visa-free short stay. To work in Hungary, Americans need a residence permit that authorises employment. The most popular option is the White Card, which allows you to live in Hungary while working remotely for a company outside Hungary. Other options include the Guest Self-Employment permit (for entrepreneurs) and the Employment Permit (for those with a Hungarian employer).
What is the most popular residence permit for Americans in Hungary?
The White Card is the most commonly requested permit among US citizens. It is designed for remote workers who earn at least EUR 3,000 per month net from a foreign employer or their own foreign company. It is valid for 1 year and can be renewed once for a maximum of 2 years. Americans can enter Hungary visa-free and apply for the White Card from inside the country.
Can Americans apply for a Hungarian residence permit from inside Hungary?
Yes. Because the US is a visa-free country, you can fly to Hungary on your 90-day visa-free allowance and submit your residence permit application from inside the country. You can apply online via the Enter Hungary platform or in person at the NDGAP regional office. You do not need to visit a Hungarian embassy first.
Will Americans need ETIAS to visit Hungary?

Where is the Hungarian Embassy in the United States?
The Embassy of Hungary is at 3910 Shoemaker Street NW, Washington, DC 20008. Hungary also has Consulate Generals in New York (223 East 52nd Street) and Los Angeles (11766 Wilshire Blvd, Suite 410). How long does a US passport need to be valid to enter Hungary?
Your US passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen Area. Although the US has a bilateral agreement that can exempt Americans from the 10-year passport age rule, carrying a passport issued within the last 10 years is recommended to avoid any issues at the border.
