Hungary Visa Requirements for Australian Citizens
Australians can visit Hungary visa-free for up to 90 days. If you want to live, work, or base your business in Hungary, you will need a residence permit. Here is what you need to know.
Quick facts for Australian citizens
Short stays: up to 90 days
Australian passport holders can enter Hungary and the wider Schengen Area without a visa for stays of up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. This covers holidays, business meetings, visiting family, and other short-term purposes.
The 90-day limit is shared across all 29 Schengen countries. Days spent in France, Germany, Italy, or any other Schengen member count toward the same 90-day allowance. Once you have used your full 90 days, you must leave the Schengen Area and wait another 90 days before re-entering.
You cannot take up employment, start a business, or enroll in a long-term study program during a visa-free stay.
Entry requirements
When arriving in Hungary, Australian citizens should have the following ready:
- Valid Australian passport: Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area and issued within the last 10 years.
- Travel health insurance: Strongly recommended. Unlike Australia’s reciprocal healthcare agreements with some countries, there is no Medicare-equivalent arrangement with Hungary. Medical treatment without insurance can be costly.
- Proof of sufficient funds: You may be asked to show that you can support yourself during your stay. A credit card or bank statement is usually enough.
- Accommodation details: A hotel booking, Airbnb confirmation, or letter from a host can be requested at the border.
- Return or onward travel: Evidence that you plan to leave the Schengen Area before your 90 days expire, such as a return flight booking.
The 90/180-day Schengen rule explained
If you are familiar with Australia’s ETA (Electronic Travel Authority), the Schengen 90/180-day rule is a different system. Rather than tracking individual trips, the Schengen Area uses a rolling 180-day window.
On any given day you are present in the Schengen Area, authorities look back 180 days and count how many of those days you spent inside the zone. If the count reaches 90, you are overstaying.
This is particularly important for Australians planning extended European travel. If you spend 60 days in Western Europe before arriving in Hungary, you only have 30 days of visa-free time remaining. The clock does not reset when you cross borders between Schengen countries.
Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, and entry bans affecting all 29 Schengen member states.
ETIAS: coming in 2027
From 2027, Australian citizens will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorisation before entering the Schengen Area. If you have used Australia’s ETA system, the concept will be familiar. ETIAS is an online pre-screening tool, not a visa.
You complete the application online, pay a small fee, and typically receive approval within minutes. It is valid for three years and covers unlimited short-stay entries.
Staying longer than 90 days
Australians who want to live in Hungary beyond the 90-day visa-free period need a Hungarian residence permit. Because Australia is a visa-free country, you can fly to Hungary first and apply for your permit while already in the country, either online via Enter Hungary or in person at an NDGAP (National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing) regional office.
You do not need to visit a Hungarian embassy or consulate in Australia before travelling.

Since Australian citizens can apply for residence permits from inside Hungary, most Australians do not need to visit a Hungarian embassy before their trip.
Time zone and travel considerations
Hungary is 8 to 10 hours behind Australian Eastern Standard Time, depending on daylight saving. Budapest is well connected by air to major European hubs, though direct flights from Australia are not available. Most Australians route through London, Frankfurt, Istanbul, or Dubai, with total travel times of 20 to 24 hours.
If you are planning to work remotely from Hungary for an Australian employer, the time difference is worth factoring in. Many Australians on White Card permits find that the overlap between Hungarian afternoon and Australian morning works well for meetings and collaboration.
Information on this page is based on current Schengen visa policy and Hungarian immigration law. Requirements can change. Always verify with the Hungarian Embassy in Canberra or the NDGAP before making plans.
Do Australian citizens need a visa to visit Hungary?
No. Australians can visit Hungary and the wider Schengen Area without a visa for up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. This covers tourism, business trips, and short visits.
How long can Australians stay in Hungary without a visa?
Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. This limit is shared across all 29 Schengen countries. If you spend time in other European countries before arriving in Hungary, those days count toward your 90-day allowance.
Can Australians work in Hungary?
Not on a visa-free short stay. To work in Hungary, you need a residence permit. The White Card is popular with Australians who work remotely for Australian or other foreign companies. Other options include the Guest Self-Employment permit for entrepreneurs and the Employment Permit for those with a Hungarian employer.
Can Australians apply for a residence permit from inside Hungary?
Yes. Because Australia is a visa-free country, you can fly to Hungary on your 90-day allowance and apply for your residence permit from within the country. Applications can be submitted online via the Enter Hungary platform or in person at the NDGAP regional office.
Will Australians need ETIAS to visit Hungary?
Yes. From 2027, all visa-exempt nationals including Australians will need an ETIAS travel authorisation before entering the Schengen Area. It works similarly to Australia’s own ETA system. The application is online, costs a small fee, and is valid for three years.
What is the time difference between Australia and Hungary?
Hungary is 8 to 10 hours behind Australian Eastern Standard Time, depending on daylight saving. Many Australian remote workers on White Card permits find that Hungarian afternoon overlaps with Australian morning, which works well for meetings.
Where is the Hungarian Embassy in Australia?
The Embassy of Hungary is at 17 Beale Crescent, Deakin, ACT 2600 in Canberra. There is also a Consulate in Sydney at Edgecliff Centre, Suite 405, 203-233 New South Head Road, Edgecliff. Since Australians can apply for permits from inside Hungary, embassy visits before travelling are usually not necessary.
Does Australia have a healthcare agreement with Hungary?
