Getting the guest self-employment permit is one thing. Keeping it is another, and the rules tightened in 2025. Two things matter most: meeting the income requirement, and filing a report every quarter. Miss the reporting and you can lose the permit, so this is worth getting right from day one.
The income requirement
Your business income has to clear a threshold, set at 24 times the monthly minimum wage. With the 2026 minimum wage, that works out at roughly 7.9 million HUF a year, around €20,000. It is not enough to hit it once: you need to keep meeting it for as long as you hold the permit, and you will be asked to prove it.
The quarterly report, and why it matters most
This is the rule that catches people out. Since 2025, holders of the guest self-employment permit must submit a report every quarter to the immigration authority through the E-Papír platform. Each report has to show:
- the invoices you issued during the quarter;
- bank statements showing the income actually coming into the business;
- proof that your income still meets the threshold on a pro-rata basis.
Important: failing to submit even a single quarterly report can lead to your permit being revoked immediately. Put the deadlines in your calendar, or have your accountant file the reports for you.
Bringing your family
Family rules on this permit are a little particular. A spouse can be included from the start if they are registered as a co-founder or shareholder in your business. Children under 18, however, cannot join straight away, they can usually only apply for family reunification at the first extension, after your first year. If bringing the whole family quickly is your priority, it is worth weighing this against other routes.
How long the permit lasts
The guest self-employment permit is first issued for one year, then extended for a further two, giving up to three years before you look at longer-term options. Each renewal checks that you have kept up the income and the quarterly reporting, so steady compliance is what keeps you on track.
